Utilizing diamond wire technology PD was involved in planning and cutting a large portal in the side of containment for the removal of the reactor vessel, pressurizer and steam generators. In addition, diamond wire sawing was utilized in a multitude of configuration for the removal of the steam generator concrete “dog houses” and pressurizer roof.
The opening in the side of the reactor containment structure measured approximately twenty-five feet wide, thirty-five feet high and three feet thick heavily reinforced concrete. The wall was cut into twenty sections for removal. Each of the 20 containment wall blocks weighed twenty thousand pounds.
